Find the real free range eggs

Many eggs sold in supermarkets are labelled "free range" but actually come from chickens kept in really cramped conditions. That's where CluckAR comes in. The latest version of our app has a 'good egg' map - and we need your help to populate it.

Join the hunt by downloading the free app for iOS or Android.

So what's 'CluckAR'?

CluckAR is a revolutionary little tool from the CHOICE New Things Lab, inspired by CHOICE’s tireless campaigning for better, more meaningful free-range egg labelling. While the CSIRO Model Code recommends that layer hens are stocked at a maximum density of 1,500 per hectare – so they can scratch, peck, move around, and generally enjoy the outdoors – some eggs with “free range” on the carton are from farms stocked as densely as 10,000 hens per hectare.

Consumers have told us that 10,000 hens per hectare is not what they picture when they pay extra for free-range eggs. But with CluckAR, you can simply point your smartphone camera at a carton in the supermarket, and get a clear picture of which brands are selling eggs from the most chilled-out, happy hens. And it’s powered by CHOICE’s unbiased, up-to-date research, so you can be sure you’re getting independent advice on which eggs are worth, well, shelling out for.

Cracking new features

The app now tells you if a brand has refused to give us their stocking density information, or if they've requested to be taken off CluckAR.

It also tells you if a brand is being investigated, or has previously been investigated by the ACCC. You'll see a 'chicken of justice' to show you this.

It shows whether a brand is certified by the RSPCA, Humane Choice or Australian Certified Organic, so you can learn more about these eggs.

And there are now in-app purchases where you can buy CHOICE’s free range egg e-book, or fun virtual items as a way to help support CluckAR.
